Introducing her second issue as Editor of ELLE Decoration South Africa, Bielle Bellingham shares her personal letter to you, our readers. Inspired by motivational quotes, starting new winter projects and a vehement dislike of tracksuit pants, read her Ed’s Note right here.
I’ll start with a few pearlers; quotes from the artists and designers featured in this issue’s Artists in Residence feature (p65). ‘Let’s make mistakes. Believe in your own story and tell it. Just do it. And never underestimate the power of naps.’
I have always subscribed to motivational quotes. As horribly cheesy as they can sometimes be, I take great comfort in them; everyone needs a good pep talk at times. Especially in creative pursuits where doubt often creeps in, ennui or even worse — complacency. Creative block happens to everyone; the trick is not to entertain it.
Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working
This winter, I challenge you to use your time indoors wisely. Get cosy and warm yes, but move out of your comfort zones. Challenge yourself. Be productive. Turn off the TV and get your paints out or your pastels, guitar or sewing machine. Start a project, redesign your living room, make your own butter (p76). Shake things up.
Who says winter has to be all about browns and maroon? Get fresh; hibernate in style (p40) and most of all, be audacious. Think: ‘what would Beezy Bailey do? (p133) — his advice: ‘No one has ever died from painting their home a garish colour’.
And the most important thing, don’t wear tracksuit pants in public. To quote yet another brave artist, Karl Lagerfeld: ‘[they] are the ultimate sign of defeat’. Being warm does NOT mean you need to sacrifice style. In fact, quite the opposite. Akin to fashion, dressing your home up for winter can be a great exercise in creative expression.
So without further adieu, welcome to the Winter Issue. We trust that you will find all the inspiration you need to keep you busy until next issue. Also, watch out for our exciting new ELLE Decoration Style Directory; the ultimate reference book for home-owners, decorators, designers and architects. On shelf soon.
