Back in the late ’80s I remember my visit to Boyd Ferguson’s first shop, a tiny little hole in the wall called Cecile & Boyd’s on Durban’s Argyle Road. At the time they were making lamps cast in plaster, hand-finished with decorative patinas that still seem fresh today. The store fast became an icon of good taste, mainly because no one at the time was doing anything remotely unique. Boyd was always on hand to advise customers unsure of quite what to do with the sudden onslaught of good taste. His manners were, and remain, impeccable.
Things have changed, the store moved to a new location on Florida Road, Boyd became rightly famous for his interior design, and Johnny Rowe became a deserved partner. To this day there is no other interior store with this kind of style and integrity in South Africa. Their new Cape Town showroom is breathtaking (it was featured in Issue 61), but Durban retains the wisdom of age. I hope you enjoy this little tour of duty.
