Cultural heritage and a contemporary aesthetic combine in Sanders hotel in Copenhagen, whose exquisite interiors are infused with time-honoured Scandinavian design principles.
Copenhagen’s historic Hotel Opera has been given a new lease of life as a sophisticated boutique hotel in the heart of the city’s cultural district. Founded by renowned Danish ballet dancer Alexander Kølpin, Sanders is an elegant escape situated directly behind Copenhagen’s Royal Danish Theatre – a fitting location that speaks of Kølpin’s creative history.
This personal link is evident in the interiors by London-based studio Lind + Almond, who drew inspiration from the owner’s life and travels and merged it with time-honoured Scandinavian design principles. There are the sleek, clean lines and muted neutral tones traditionally associated with Nordic minimalism, while sumptuous fabrics, ambient lighting and warm wooden details are the epitome of hygge.
Each of the 54 bedrooms possesses its own unique style, from the intimate Single Coupé rooms that are reminiscent of luxury train cabins of a bygone era to the spacious Sanders Apartments, which include separate lounges and open fireplaces.
It’s an unfussy aesthetic that infuses easy elegance with the tactile nature of materials such as rattan, velvet, cotton, marble and leather. Even Sanders’ dining options are delightfully comfortable, and guests can choose between eating at the achingly cool Sanders Kitchen or in the picturesque rooftop conservatory and lush courtyard.
As for convivial libations, there’s TATA, a cocktail bar infused with vintage charm whose name comes from the Royal Danish Theatre’s age-old soubriquet for the red velvet curtain.
