A hashtag-led campaign celebrating Africa, started by 17-year-old Ghanaian Rachel Markham and 22-year-old Somali Diana Salah, is taking twitter and Instagram by storm. DECO took a look beyond the hashtags to discover the hidden gems of our continent.
#TheAfricaTheMedianNeverShowsYou has had more than 70,000 posts in recent weeks with images being shared that counteract what is more often than not the usual representation of Africa in the media: disaster, images of emaciated children, war, widespread poverty and inhumane conditions.
The images being shared rather show the world what Africa is to them, from beautiful vistas, to cultural celebrations, bustling cities, thriving art scenes and the people of this magical continent.
As a Ghanaian I know very well there is so much more than all the poverty and suffering. Behind that is something that is rarely shown.
“I started the hashtag because I thought the world deserved to know the truth,” said Rachel Markham (@WestAfricanne). Twitter and Instagram users have leapt on board with great enthusiasm, seeing #TheAfricaTheMedianNeverShowsYou go viral within days of being launched. The ever-growing number of images are an intriguing visual armchair tour through the continent’s landscapes and people.
