Last week brought the Haute Couture Autumn Winter 2015 fashion week to Paris and it’s definitely one that DECO would have loved to experience front row as Viktor & Rolf showed off their astonishing wearable art collection in the mezzanine space of Palais de Tokyo.

Dutch Fashion Designers, Viktor and Rolf, adorned their catwalk with broken picture frames filled with fabric, artfully transformed into haute-couture gowns. The artworks were draped over simple paint-splattered denim shirts with rolled up sleeves, made to look like artists’ shirts.

Spectators not only enjoyed the aesthetic of the final pieces but were also given the opportunity to watch as the designers hand-crafted an artistic optical illusion. Taking framed canvases from the walls of the catwalk, the pair manually reconfigured the sections of gilded frames and materials onto the models, lifting the pieces over their shoulders or up their legs for the perfect fit.

Not only a feat of art-meets-fashion creativity, but also a theatrical interpretation of the painstaking styling involved moments before the model takes to the catwalk – a private moment always usually reserved for backstage-only, away from the critical eyes of the front row.

A dress transforms into an artwork, back into a dress and into an artwork again. Poetry becomes reality, morphing back into fantasy.

The shapes of the garments became more exaggerated as the show went on and the fabric prints also gradually increased in complexity, decorated with paintings inspired from the Dutch Golden Age in the 17th century.

This duo’s collection may seem a bit too bold a look for you to work on your average day, but in our latest issue we show you how to draw inspiration from art when styling your home. Grab a copy while it’s still on theshelf!
