Winners of the ‘Win A Home’ series reflect on life changing events that many viewers on SABC 3 witnessed with delight and envy over a week ago. I’m sure many are still wondering: who is Josh Gloak, the winner of the multi-million rand apartment at the luxurious Steyn City Lifestyle Resort? How did he enter the competition and how did he react to when his name was announced?
We touched base with Josh, as well as Donald Nxumalo, the interior design competition winner and Kim Hutton of KimH, designer of the prize apartment.
Josh says: ‘My current lease is about to expire so I was actually looking for an apartment to rent when I discovered the series. I entered the competition several times, but didn’t think I would actually win. I felt so lucky to be one of three finalists picked out of over a million entries.’
Speaking about the impact of his win, Josh adds: ‘I am still trying to come to grips with the magnitude of the prize, and have some plans to capitalise on the potential it offers to generate further wealth from the property.’
Donald Nxumalo, a familiar face to the viewers and winner of the interior design competition, shares his learnings.
The opportunity to decorate an apartment on a televised competition provided me with an amazing platform to launch my business and gain a client base from the show’s audience. The programme has taught me how to deliver quality work under pressure, adhere to strict timelines and a tight budget.
‘I am grateful to my mentor, Abilene Brodie of Head Interiors, who became my cheer leader, mentor and friend; taught me about time management and balancing a room’s functionality with its appearance.’
As part of his prize, Donald is commencing with an internship under Kim Hutton. He is eager to devour the wealth of knowledge that Kim has accumulated over the years.
As a parting shot, Kim says:
I was delighted to be included in a fully home-grown South African television programme focussed on identifying and developing local young talent.
‘The young 4D designers demonstrated their determination and incredible design abilities. It was an absolute pleasure to be part of this programme, particularly as it focussed on developing South African design,’ concludes Kim.
