Few design elements are as versatile and wield as much power to define and transfigure a space as light does.

Photographer John Sexton puts it simply: ‘It is light that reveals, light that obscures, light that communicates’ – true words for any interior designer or homeowner who would dare to explore this fascinating medium. The challenge, of course, remains of how to strike the perfect balance between functionality and creative expression.

In Search of Brilliance

This year, yet again, the Eskom Energy Efficient Lighting Design Competition will showcase local lighting designs that exude individuality and challenge convention. The search is on for talented South Africans with flair and design savvy. The kind of artistic intuition that sparks new trends. And, above all, embody a special gift that has the ability to turn pure science into pure art.

Designers, DIY-loving homeowners and other artistic souls are invited to design a luminaire (light fitting) that makes use of energy-efficient technology, such as compact fluorescent (or energy-saving lamp), light-emitting diodes (LEDs), fibre optic or any energy efficient lighting system or product suitable for residential application.

Two design criteria

• Eskom is inviting high school learners, students and professional designers to think outside the box and submit imaginative lamp designs that not only work but also are pleasing to the eye. It is of major importance that all designs make use of energy-efficient light sources.

• Secondly, professional designers are also invited to submit innovative energy-efficient designs, systems or products that are suitable for residential applications. These may include, for example, a complete lighting system that caters for a low-cost housing development. Once again, the key word is energy-efficiency.
